Tartans Fall Just Short of Road Victory

Stats

Nov. 4 - (ATLANTA, Ga.) – Despite taking an early lead, the Carnegie Mellon Tartans couldn’t hold off the Emory Eagles falling 2-1 in University Athletic Association action. The Tartans finish the year with a 10-4-2 overall record and a 3-4 slate in UAA play. The Eagles moved to 12-2-2 and 5-2 in UAA play.

After 45 minutes of play, the Eagles held the shot advantage 5-4 but the Tartans held the lead, 1-0, after junior midfielder Lisa Pascoli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute of play.

Emory had the chance to tie the score but Tartan freshman keeper Christie Adams (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) saved two shots by Nancy Wilson in the 26th and 28th minutes, the first coming off a corner kick.

The Tartans threatened to add to their lead in the 32nd minute when sophomore defender Amanda Rose (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) sent a free kick to the far post ready to meet freshman midfielder Abby Coffin's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) head before Eagle keeper Amy Franciscovich punched the cross away. Coffin had another opportunity for a goal when Rose sent a cross to the box, which Coffin volleyed but Franciscovich made the save.

The Eagles countered with eight minutes to go in the half with two threatening shots against Adams. A shot by Lauren Hudak went just wide of the goal, while Gail Bush chipped a shot over a charging Adams that went high over the net.

Emory didn't waste time tying the game after the half, as Jillian Brady found the net four minutes back into action. Brady received a pass from Amy Bedford after a cross by Alison English, and finished to the low far post.

Senior midfielder Kristin Bevilacqua-Linn (Carmel, N.Y.)nearly gave Carnegie Mellon a 2-1 lead with a shot that Franciscovich slid and kicked away, giving the Tartans a corner kick.

A counter move by the Eagles saw Bush race the ball down the sideline, make a move on the outside defender and send a pass across the box which Joyce Lam misfired. Unfortunately for the Tartans, Nancy Wilson was there to follow and score the go ahead goal in the 68th minute.

A centering pass by senior forward Hallie Dumont (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) found fellow senior forward Nadya Yaghoubi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) inside the six, who attempted a shot but was stopped by Lam, who cleared the ball off the line for the Eagles with 8:20 to play.

The Tartans last opportunity to tie the score came with less than two minutes to play, as Rose sent a corner kick through the box which was deflected in the direction of Pascoli, whose attempt went wide.

Adams finished the game with four saves, as Franciscovich totaled three with numerous clears.

The Tartans will wait to hear about postseason play, as they finish the regular season with a 10-4-2 mark.
