Women’s Soccer Battle to 0-0 Tie

Sept. 27 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team and the visiting Allegheny Gators tied 0-0 on a cool Tuesday night under the lights at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans are now 6-0-2 on the season and the Gators move to 6-2-1.
Allegheny suffered a tough loss when senior midfielder Jen Bilec (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) went down with an injury in the third minute of the game. She return to the field of play the rest of the game.
Early in the second half sophomore midfielder Jessica Howard (Brookline, Mass.) headed a corner off the crossbar in what proved to be one of the Tartans best chances on the night. In overtime Carnegie Mellon’s freshman midfielder Abigail Coffin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) headed the ball from the middle of the box just below the crossbar only to have Gator goalie Beth Van Parys punch the ball over the bar.
The Tartans put the pressure on the Gator defense and controlled the play throughout, as they out shot Allegheny 23-2. Freshman goalie Mary Ashe (Rockville, Md./Wootton) was untested during the 110 minutes of play recorded her fifth shutout of the season and is now 4-0-2. Van Parys preserved her shutout thanks to some nifty saves. She ended up with 12 saves on the night.
The Tartans will resume play this Sunday, October 2 when they open UAA play against the University of Chicago at 1:30 p.m.
