Beck, Salpeter Earn Academic Recognition

Nov. 2 - (DELAWARE, Ohio) – A pair of Carnegie Mellon senior women’s soccer players, midfielder Margaret Beck (Boise, Idaho) and defender Mollie Salpeter (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), earned academic honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition. The official sponsor is ESPN the Magazine.

Beck earned First Team All-Region District II honors, while Salpeter was voted to the Third Team. District II is comprised of non-NCAA Division I Colleges in the states of Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. In order to be nominated a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and hold a 3.2 GPA or better.

As a midfielder, Beck as scored in two games. She had two goals in a 4-0 victory of Mt. Union, including the game-winner. She has also created numerous opportunities for her teammates and has helped shut down other teams offensive players.

Salpeter has been starting defender for the Tartans all four years and is a main reason the team has recorded 11 shutouts this season and 38 during her tenure. She is often the last line of defense and consistently halts the opposing team’s offensive threats.

“Not only are Mollie and Maggie an integral part of our success this season on the field, they are great examples of what a student-athlete should be with their hard work and dedication in the classroom,” comments Head Coach Sue Willard.

Because Beck earned first team honors, she will be placed on the national ballot with the chance to be named to the ESPN the Magazine All-American Team.
