Women’s Cross Country Takes Sixth at UAA Championships

Oct. 28 - (ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team competed at the University Athletic Assocation (UAA) Championship meet hosted by Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, October 28 and finished in sixth place out of the eight teams in the UAA. The #17 ranked Case Western Reserve Spartans put together a stellar performance to edge the #3 ranked Washington University Bears for the team title. Case won the 74-runner meet with 39 points, compared to Washington’s 42. Carnegie Mellon improved on their seventh place finish last year and eighth place finish two years ago by finishing sixth with 157 points.

The Tartans’ top seven runners all ran personal best times over the six kilometer course. Freshman Danielle Sedlack (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) finished first on the team with a time of 23:58.03 en route to coming in 20th place. Freshman Hallie Espel (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins) placed 25th overall with a time of 24:07.53.

Sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.) and senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) finished together in 37th and 38th place respectively. Clayton covered the course in 24:38.41 and Castillo crossed the line in 24:41.39.

Junior Carrie Kmetzo (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) was the team’s number five runner and she came in 48th place with a time of 25:12.45. Freshman Anna Lenhart (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and sophomore Chrissy Krutz (Natrona Heights, Pa./Shady Side Academy) rounded out the top seven for Carnegie Mellon. Lenhart (25:36.90) finished 54th and Krutz (25:48.37) placed 56th.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s team will be in action again on Saturday, November 11th when they race at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional hosted by Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, Pa. The top teams from the regional advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by Wilmington College at Voice of America Park in Wilmington, Ohio on Saturday, November 18th.
