Women’s Cross Country Races to Fifth Place Finish

Sept. 2 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – On Saturday, September 2, the Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team made their 2006 debut at the Duquesne Duals held at Schenley Park. With 11 runners not returning and seven newcomers, the new look Tartans added to their new look with the debut of the “spankies”, their new uniforms. The uniforms led them to a fifth place finish out of seven teams.
With rain falling from the sky and temperatures in the high 50’s, the Tartans were led by sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.), who traversed the five kilometer course in 20:03, good for 15th overall. Junior Carrie Kmetzo (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) came in 25th place with a time of 20:25 and freshman Danielle Sedlack (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) ran a solid first race, coming in 27th in a time of 20:47. Senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) made her cross country debut and ran a time of 21:02, good for 33rd overall. Hallie Espel (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins), Katie Bastine (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton), and Chrissy Krutz (Natrona Heights, Pa./Shady Side Academy) rounded out the top seven for the Tartans. Espel (21:06) finished in 35th place, Bastine (21:26) came in 38th, and Krutz (21:29) crossed the finish line in 41st.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team will race again on September 16 when they travel to Waynesburg, PA for the Waynesburg Invitational.
