Women’s Cross Country Runs Well at Home Invitational

Oct. 14 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team hosted the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Schenley Park on Saturday, October 14. The team raced to a ninth place finish out of the 20 teams competing. The Tartans finished with 237 points and George Washington amounted 83 points in taking home the team title.
Freshman Hallie Espel (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins) paced the Tartans for the third consecutive race, as she covered the hilly five kilometer course in a personal best time of 19:42.94. She finished 27th overall in the 212 runner race. Freshman Danielle Sedlack (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) also ran a personal best time en route to placing 40th in 19:55.83 and sophomore Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.) took 45th place in a personal best time of 20:00.66.
Senior Jerri Castillo (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) was Carnegie Mellon’s number four runner, finishing 62nd in a personal best time of 20:26.88. Junior Carrie Kmetzo (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) was fifth on the team, placing 69th in 20:39.06.
Rounding out the top seven for Carnegie Mellon were freshman Anna Lenhart (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and sophomore Chrissy Krutz (Natrona Heights, Pa./Shady Side Academy). Lenhart (83rd) ran a personal best time of 20:54.05 and Krutz (93rd) crossed the line in a personal best time of 21:04.89.
The next race for the Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team is the University Athletic Association Conference Championships in two weeks. The race is held at Washington (Mo.) University this year. The Tartans will look to improve on last year’s seventh place finish.
