Women’s Basketball Improves to 5-1 with 60-50 Win at Waynesburg

Nov. 28 – (WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team traveled to Waynesburg University, Wednesday, November 28 and came away with a 60-50 victory. The Tartans move to 5-1 on the season as the Yellow Jackets drop their third straight moving to 1-3.
After a poor shooting performance by both teams over the first ten minutes of play, Carnegie Mellon cashed in on three straight possessions to take a 15-8 lead with 8:56 to play in the first. With the Tartans leading 22-15 in the closing seconds of the half junior guard Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) turned two steals into five straight fast break points giving the Cardinal and Gray a 27-15 edge. The Yellow Jackets ended the half with two foul shots by sophomore Johnna Deco cutting the Tartans lead to 27-17 heading into the break.
Carnegie Mellon started the game 0-of-8 from the field Carnegie Mellon, but the finished strong shooting 44.0% (11-25) the rest of the half. The Yellow Jackets shot 31.8% in the first half after starting the game 1-of-7. Aleski led all scorers after the first stanza with eight points.
At the 16:30 mark in the second half Carnegie Mellon went on a 12-2 run taking a 43-24 lead with 12:00 minutes to play in regulation. Waynesburg answered the Taratns run with one of their own. Over the next 3:26 the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-5 run pulling within 12 at 48-36, but two straight buckets by Carnegie Mellon ended the threat.
Waynesburg did not go away, as they rattled off six unanswered points cutting the Tartans lead to 56-47 with 1:54 to play. That is as close the Yellow Jackets got, as Carnegie Mellon went on to the 60-50 victory.
Aleski led all players finishing with 18 points and recorded four steals. Junior forward Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) tallied double figures for the second straight game cashing in with ten. Junior forward Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) hauled in a team-high seven rebounds and added nine points while dishing out a career-high seven assists in the win.
Carnegie Mellon finished the game shooting 37.9% from the field compared to 35.8% by Waynesburg. The Yellow Jackets controlled the glass out rebounding the Tartans 40-30.
The Tartans will be idle until they travel to Cancun, Mexico to play a pair of games December 20-21. They will tip-off Friday against LaVerne before facing Concordia-Austin Saturday. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m.
