Tough Shooting Dooms Tartans

Feb. 8 – (ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – A rough shooting night hurt the Tartans has they fell to the Washington University Bears 64-37 on Friday, February 8. Carnegie Mellon University is now 7-12 for the year and 0-8 in University Athletic Association play. The Bears improve to 14-5 and 6-2 in the UAA.

The Tartans started the game making three of four shot attempts and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Paige Williamson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) at the 13:46 mark tied the score at 11-11 before the Cardinal and Gray missed six straight shots and turned the ball over six times over a five plus minute span. During the Tartans drought the Bears made five of eight shots including three treys to jump to a 15-point advantage with 8:13 to go in the period.

Junior forward Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) stopped the Bears run with a lay-up but it would be another four-and-a-half minutes before the Tartans would score again and the home team pushed their lead to as many as 23 points during the first 20 minutes.

The Bears pushed their 42-19 halftime lead to 56-22 as they hit seven of their first eight shots from the field in the first four minutes of second half action. The Bears finished with a 49.1% field goal percentage as the Tartans had their lowest percentage of the year at 21.3%.

Junior guard Corey Innes (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland) led all scorers with 13 points hitting three of six treys for the game. Roll pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, with nine coming in the first half.

Zoe Unruh led the Bears with 12 points while Shanna-Lei Dacanay and Janice Evans each had 10 points.

The Tartans move on to Chicago for a 2:00 p.m. tip on Sunday, February 10.
