Women’s Basketball Drop 72-45 Decision to John Carroll

Dec. 29 – (SPRINGFIELD, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team competed in the championship game of the 2007 Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic hosted by Wittenberg University, Saturday, December 29 and fell 72-45 to the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University.  The loss moves the Tartans record to 6-4, as the Blue Streaks move one game under .500 at 4-5.

A sloppy shooting performance by Carnegie Mellon during the first twenty minutes of play gave John Carroll a 37-13 lead at the break.  The Tartans went a stretch of seven minutes without a point, as the Blue Streaks managed an 11-0 run over the span taking a 31-10 lead.  Blue Streak freshman transfer Lianna Jennings and sophomore Laura Gruber led all scorers at the half with eight points apiece, as Gruber scored the last eight points of the half for John Carroll.

The second half was more evenly match, as the Tartans improved on the 20% field goal percentage from the first half shooting 40.0% in the second finishing 29.1% from the floor on the night.  John Carroll ended the evening shooting 48.3%.  

Leading the way for Carnegie Mellon was senior Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) with 12 points on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team.  Jennings, a member of the All-Tournament Team, led the Blue Streaks with a career-high 18 points.  Sophomore post Caitlin Sureck, the tournament MVP, ended the contest with 10 points while hauling in six rebounds.   

The Tartan women’s team will be in action again on Saturday, January 5 when they open University Athletic Association (UAA) play.  Carnegie Mellon will travel to the University of Rochester for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
