Women’s Basketball Defeats Grove City 59-47

Nov. 20 – (GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team traveled to Grove City College, Tuesday, November 20 and came away with a 59-47 victory.  The win moves the Tartans record to 3-0, as the Wolverines drop their first contest of the season moving to 2-1.

With the score 9-6 in favor of the Tartans junior guard Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) started a 10-2 run for Carnegie Mellon extending their lead to 19-8 with 11:21 to play in the first half.  Aleski started the run with five straight points and accounted for eight including two treys.

The Cardinal and Gray built their biggest lead of the half (29-15) on junior Colleen Light’s (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) jumper with 5:51 to play.  Carnegie Mellon continued to hold the lead, as the Wolverines only pulled within nine the rest of the half.  Junior post player Ashley Rothwell’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) lay-up with seven seconds left in the half extended the Tartans lead back to 14 making the score 36-22 heading in to the break.  Aleski led all scorers at the half with 12 points hitting all three of her shots from behind the arc.

The Tartans took a 53-34 advantage with 9:28 left in regulation, but the Wolverines wouldn’t give up.  Grove City went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:51 cutting the deficit to 53-43 with 5:39 to play.  Rothwell put an end to the Wolverines run hitting two straight buckets pushing the lead to 14 (57-43).  Senior Shannon Overdorff and junior Katy McCready pulled Grove City back within ten (57-47), but that is as close as the Wolverines got.  

Aleski led all scorers with a season-high 19 points along with eight rebounds.  Junior forward Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) was the only other Tartan in double figures finishing the game with ten points.  Junior forward Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) hauled in a season-high 11 rebounds in the win.

Carnegie Mellon out rebounded Grove City 59-47 and committed three less turnovers.  The Tartans shot 38.1% from the floor, as the Wolverines shot 30.2.  

The Tartans will be back in action Friday, November 23 when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan to take on Capital in the first round of the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament.  Tip is slated for 8:00 p.m.
