Stats

Nov. 24 – (DELAWARE, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team rebounded from Friday night's performance with a steller showing againt Frostburg State University in the consolation game of Ohio Wesleyan's Bishop Classic "Hoops for Hope" Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 57-53 victory. The Tartans are now 4-1 on the season while Frostburg dropped to 3-2.

Three players reached double figures for the Tartans who jumped out to a nine-point lead seven minutes into the game. The Bobcats managed just three baskets over the seven minute span in which the Tartans led 15-6. After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, Frostburg pulled within two on a lay-up by Ashley Anthony at the 3:02 mark to make the score 19-17. The Tartans didn't help matters by turning the ball over on eight of their 11 possessions during the Bobcats 11-0 run.

The Tartans would respond with a 10-3 run to end the half when juniors Corey Innes (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland) and Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) each contributed two free throws and a basket as the Bobcats missed seven opportunities.

The second half started with the Tartans on fire as they hit seven of their first 11 shots ending on a three-pointer by Innes at the 7:20 mark, which gave the Cardinal and Gray a 51-32 advantage and their largest lead of the game.

A five-for-seven performance from the floor and four free throws by the Bobcats, combined with a cold spurt by the Tartans, enabled Frostburg to close the gap to three points with 1:11 to play.

The Tartans were able to hold off their pesky opponent with a lay-up by junior Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) and four-of-six free throws down the stretch.

Innes, Schilling and senior Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) each had 10 points for the Tartans while junior Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) led the team on the glass with nine boards. Roll and Feola also pulled down eight apiece. As a team, the Tartans shot 43.5% for the afternoon, while Frostburg hit 33.3% of their attempts. Free throws were big for Carnegie Mellon, who made 14-18 compared to Frostburg's 9-19 performance.

The Tartans continue their season with a road contest at Waynesburg College on Wednesday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m.
