Women’s Basketball Stings Yellow Jackets; Improves to 4-0

Nov. 28 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball team moved to 4-0 on the young season by defeating the visiting Waynesburg Yellow Jackets 66-52 on Tuesday, November 28 in Skibo Gymnasium. Waynesburg falls to 2-4 with the loss. This marks the first time the Tartans have started 4-0 since the 2000-2001 season, when the defeated Waynesburg to do so.

The Tartans jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, thanks in part to their pressure defense that forced Waynesburg into committing 31 turnovers in the game. A basket by sophomore forward Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) gave the Tartans their biggest lead of the first half at 28-12 with 2:42 to go. The Tartans took a 30-21 advantage into halftime.

Carnegie Mellon scored ten straight points to start the second half to balloon their lead to 40-21, the final points coming on a lay-up by sophomore forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) off a pass from junior guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) at the 17:31 mark. The Tartans maintained the advantage the rest of the way, with their lead never dipping under double-digits in the second half.

Rothwell led the Tartans with 15 points and Feola grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with her 11 points. Sophomore guard Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) contributed 13 points, 10 of which were scored in the first half. Schilling added nine points off the bench and sophomore point guard Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) had a career-high five steals. Jeanette Wonsettler led Waynesburg with 17 points and 12 rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range in the loss.

The Tartans held a 40-18 advantage in points in the paint, and scored 25 points off Waynesburg's 31 turnovers, compared to Waynesburg’s nine points off 15 Tartan miscues.

The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball team will suit up again on Saturday, December 2 when they open University Athletic Association play against the Rochester Yellowjackets. Tip-off at Skibo Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
