Women’s Basketball Falls 72-57 at #21 Rochester to End Season

Feb. 24 – (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team ended their regular season with a 72-57 defeat at the University of Rochester, Saturday, February 24 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Yellowjackets entered the contest ranked 21st in Division III.

After Carnegie Mellon jumped out to an early 8-2 lead Rochester rattled off the next seven points to take a 9-8 advantage with 14:14 to play in the first stanza. The Yellowjacket lead didn’t last long, as sophomore forward Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) put the Tartans back on top on the en suing possession with a lay-up. The next ten minutes of the first half was back and forth basketball, as there was ten lead changes before Rochester went on an 11-2 run to close the half taking a 35-28 lead into the break.

Rochester opened the second half of play where they left off, as they put together a 20-3 run extending their lead to 55-31 with 11:44 to play in regulation. Carnegie Mellon went a spurt cutting Rochester’s lead to 69-54, but it was a little too late, as the Yellowjactes went onto the 72-57 victory.

Carnegie Mellon shot 38.3% from the floor to Rochester’s 43.5%. Junior forward Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) led the Tartans with 14 points. The only other Tartan in double figures was senior guard Ashley Mazziotta (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), as she finished with 10.

Carnegie Mellon finishes the season at 8-17 overall and 2-12 in the UAA, while the Yellowjackets move to 20-5 and 9-5 in the UAA.
