Women’s Basketball Wins Terry Greene Tip Off Classic

Nov. 19 – (Lancaster, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball competed in the championship game of the Terry Greene Tip Off Classic held at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Sunday, November 19. The Tartans faced Penn State Altoona and came away with an 86-60 victory. Carnegie Mellon is now 2-0 on the season, while Penn State Altoona moves to 1-1.

The Tartans took control of the game from the opening tip. They would build a 16 point lead in the first half and head to the locker room with a 41-26 advantage. The Lions would cut the Tartans lead to 11 (49-38) with 14:11 to play, but that is all the closer they would get as the Tartans would outscore the Lions 37-22 the rest of regulation for the 86-60 victory.

Carnegie Mellon had four players in double figures. Leading the way with a career-high 21 points was sophomore guard Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney). Light was 8-of-12 from the floor including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Junior guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) cashed in with 15, while sophomore forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) recorder her second career double-double tallying 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) had 11 points and a career-high nine assists and three steals in the win.

The Tartans had the edge on the glass for the second straight game hauling in 49 rebounds to the Lions 33. Carnegie Mellon shot 43% from the field and committed just 16 turnovers, as Penn State Altoona shot 34% and turned the ball over 19 times.

Light and Rothwell were named to the All-Tournament team, and Light was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

The Tartans will be back in action Saturday, November 25 when they host Thiel College in their home opener. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
