Women's Basketball Defeats Emory 77-66 for First UAA Victory of Season

Jan. 26 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Five players in double figures led the Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team to their first University Athletic Association (UAA) victory of the season. The Tartans defeated the Eagles of Emory University 77-66 in Skibo Gymnasium, Friday, January 26.
Carnegie Mellon (7-10, 1-5) never trailed from start to finish. The Tartans built a lead of 18 points (33-15) on a lay-up by sophomore Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) with 1:56 left in the first stanza. Emory (7-10, 1-5) then scored the final eight points of the half to cut the Tartans lead to 33-23 heading into the break. The Cardinal and Gray took advantage of the Eagles sloppy play, as they turned 11 turnovers into 11 points, while Emory scored only two points off seven Tartan turnovers.
Emory started the second half where they left off. They cut the Tartans lead to three (46-43) with 12:54 left in regulation. After a turnover by the Tartans, senior Beth Bergman knotted the score at 46-46 with her fourth trey of the evening. After an exchange of turnovers, junior Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) hit a lay-up to put the Tartans back ahead for good. Carnegie Mellon would extend their lead to as many as 12 points in the second half as they went on to the 77-66 victory.
The Tartans were led by sophomore Ashley Rothwell’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) and freshman Paige Williamson’s (Washington, Pa./Trinity) 15 points apiece. Sophomore Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) cashed in with 14, while Feola and sophomore Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) added 13 and 10.
Feola led all rebounds grabbing a career-high 13 in recording her second straight double-double. The Tartans took control of the inside game by out rebounding the Eagles 43-34 and scoring 36 points in the paint to Emory’s 22.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Bergman and sophomore Erica Kaplan with 20 points. Sophomore Lora Turner had 17 for Emory in the loss.
Carnegie Mellon will host Case Western Reserve in UAA play, Sunday, January 28 in Skibo Gymnasium. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
