Carnegie Mellon Falls 91-49 to #5 Chicago

Jan. 19 – (CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team traveled to Chicago, Ill., Friday, January 19 and played the #5 ranked team in the nation, the Maroons of the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Tartans fell 91-49 and dropped to 6-9, 0-4, while Chicago stays unbeaten at 15-0, 4-0.
The first eight-and-a-half minutes of basketball was back and forth before the Maroons went on a 15-0 run over a span of 4:49 to take a 32-12 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first stanza. Chicago’s run was ended on a lay-up by junior Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic).
Carnegie Mellon sophomore Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) caught fire from behind the arc late in the half. She pulled the Tartans within 12 (41-29) with 2:33 on the clock after hitting three straight treys. The Maroons extended their lead back to 15 and headed into the break with a 46-31 lead.
Chicago used a 15-for-20 performance on the free throw line to their advantage, as the Tartans were just 2-of-6 but matched the Maroons from the floor with the exception of one field goal.
Sophomore forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) scored the first two points of the second half, as the Tartans pulled within 13. That is as close as the Tartans got. Chicago scored the next 26 points to widen their lead to 72-33 with 12:44 left in regulation. The Maroons continued their run going on to the 91-49 victory.
Leading the Tartans was Rothwell and freshman Paige Williamson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) with 10 points. Aleski added nine for the Tartans and Feola grabbed six rebounds to lead Carnegie Mellon on the glass.
Carnegie Mellon shot 31% from the floor to Chicago’s 51%. The Maroons held the advantage on the boards, 49-28.
The Tartans will be back on the court, Sunday, January 21, as they travel to Washington University in St. Louis for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
