Women’s Basketball Defeats Chatham 77-49; Head Coach Seidl Wins 250th

Jan. 10 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team traveled across Forbes Avenue to play host Chatham College, Wednesday, January 10 and came away with a 77-49 victory. The win gave Carnegie Mellon head coach Gerri Seidl her 250th career victory. The Tartans are now 6-7, as the Cougars drop to 2-12.

The Tartans built a 25-15 lead with 5:34 left in the first half and extend their lead to 14 (31-17) on a lay-up by sophomore Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) three minutes later. The Cougars then cut the Tartans lead back to ten (33-23) heading into the break.

A 15-4 run to start the second half by the Tartans sealed the victory, as the Tartans built a 21 point lead, 48-27, with 12:14 on the clock. Chatham cut Carnegie Mellon’s lead to 52-36, but the Tartans regained their momentum and went on to the 77-49 victory.

Carnegie Mellon had four players in double figures. Leading the way was junior Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) with a game-high 14 points. Feola played a huge part in the Tartans first half, as she went 5-of-5 from the field.

Sophomore Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) cashed in with 13 points and senior Nora Darcher (Naselle, Wash.) and sophomore Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) each had 11. Aleski finished the game with team highs of eight rebounds and eight assists, while tallying nine points.

The glass was controlled by the Tartans, as they grabbed 46 rebounds to the Cougars 36. Carnegie Mellon shot 46% from the floor and 85% from the charity stripe.

The Tartans will be back on the court, Monday, January 15, as they step out of association play once again and travel to Bethany College for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
