Tartans Win Streak of Two Ends at Case Western

Feb. 2 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Tartans were not able to keep their win streak alive as Case Western Reserve University defended their home court in a 76-59 defeat of Carnegie Mellon in women’s basketball action Friday, February 2. Junior guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) scored a season-high 20 points in the loss.
Ashley Horton and Maria Jackson both hit four baskets to total nine points apiece to lead Case Western (9-10, 1-7) as they built a 15-point lead in the first half. The Spartans hit 46.4% of their shots as the Tartans (8-11, 2-6) managed to hit just 37% of their attempts.
Sophomore guard Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored seven points during a 10-3 run to end the half and cut the deficit to eight at 33-25. During the half, sophomore guard Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) had four of the Tartans 10 steals and Aleski had three assists.
The Cardinal and Gray started the second half strong with a 14-5 run over the first five minutes to pull within one-point of the home team, 39-38. Feola led the charge with six points.
Case Western answered with a 20-7 spurt to push their lead up to 14 points at 59-45 with just under seven minutes to play. The drive continued as the Spartans would finish the game with a 37-21 run after the Tartans pulled within one.
Feola’s 20 points led the Tartans on offense, as Aleski contributed 17 points and five assists and sophomore Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) came off the bench to put in 10.
Jackson was almost unstoppable as she totaled 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting. Horton was also a force for the Spartans with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Ashleigh Tondo also scored in double figures with 12 points and chipped in six assists.
The Tartans continue a four-game road trip with a visit to Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. on Sunday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m. Carnegie Mellon defeated Emory 77-66 last week in Pittsburgh.
