Women’s Basketball Wins Second Straight UAA Contest, Defeats Case 70-58

Jan. 28 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Junior Leah Feola’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) third straight double-double lifted the Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team over Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play Sunday, January 28. The Tartans outlasted the Spartans 70-58.
In the first half Carnegie Mellon (8-10, 2-5) trailed 9-8 before going on a 21-5 run capped off by sophomore Jeanette Schilling’s (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) lay-up at the 6:43 mark making it 29-14. Case Western (8-10, 0-7) was able to score the final seven points of the half however, to bring the score to 32-29 in favor of the Tartans heading into halftime.
Carnegie Mellon extend the lead back to six coming out of the locker room, taking a 38-32 lead with 16:26 to play. Case went on an 8-0 run and took the lead, 40-38, at 14:18 in the second half. The Spartans did not hold the lead for long as the Tartans knotted the score up 46-46 with ten minutes to play. Sophomore Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) then broke the tie and put the Tartans up for good, 49-46, with 9:27 to play. The Tartans foul shooting down the stretch was key, as they hit four-of-four to seal the 70-58 victory.
The Tartans were led by Feola’s 14 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Paige Williamson’s (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored 13 off the bench and Aleski cashed in with 10 points and tied her career-high by grabbing eight rebounds.
The Cardinal and Gray shot 39% from the floor to the Spartans 37%. Case Western controlled the glass hauling in 44 boards, while Carnegie Mellon came away with 39.
Carnegie Mellon will travel to Cleveland to play this same Case Western Reserve team, on Friday, February 2. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
