Brandeis Tops Carnegie Mellon in Women’s Basketball

Feb. 9 - (WALTHAM, Mass.) – Carnegie Mellon’s women’s basketball team dropped a road contest 74-48 to #21 Brandeis University on Friday, February 9. The Tartans are now 8-13 on the season and 2-8 in the University Athletic Association. Brandeis improves to 16-4 and 6-4.

For the first half, Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis had similar field goal percentages (35%) but 10 Tartan turnovers and eight offensive rebounds by the Judges allowed the home team 14 more shots in which they cashed in on five, including six made three-pointers. On the way to a 37-17 half time lead, Brandeis scored 19 points off turnovers and was led by freshman Jessica Chapin’s 12 points.

Brandeis upped their shooting percentage in the second half to 54% making another 13 baskets despite an eight-minute stretch without a field goal. The Tartans cut the deficit to 12 points twice on free throws by sophomore guard Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and a jumper by sophomore forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia). Brandeis would score on the next possession at the 6:33 mark and finish with a 21-7 run.

Rothwell was the Tartans leading scorer with 10 points. Junior guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) pulled down eight rebounds and freshman guard Paige Williamson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) dished out a team-high five assists.

Chapin finished with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. She also had a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Jaime Capra totaled 16 points and four steals in the win.

Carnegie Mellon now heads to New York University where they will face the #8 Violets on Sunday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m.
