Brandeis Tops Carnegie Mellon in Women’s Basketball

Jan. 7 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Facing their second ranked opponent of the weekend, Carnegie Mellon fell to #8 Brandeis University 71-42 in University Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon in Skibo Gymnasium. Carnegie Mellon moves to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in league play, while Brandeis jumps to 10-1 and 1-1.

A tough shooting performance by the Tartans let Brandeis take a 33-23 halftime lead. The Judges blocked five shots in the first half and forced the Tartans into 13 turnovers, despite losing the battle on the boards to the home team 24-19.

Carnegie Mellon’s Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) started the second half with a three-pointer but the Tartans went scoreless over the next six minutes while Brandeis made seven of their next 10 shots to take a 22-point lead, 45-26.

Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) scored seven of her nine points and made three steals in the second half, while grabbing a total of 10 rebounds for the game. Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) led the team with 11 points, making 5-of-7 free throws.

Caitlin Malcolm and Jaime Capra led the victors with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Reserve Jessica Chapin pitched in 13 points and Amanda Wells led the effort on the boards with five.

The Tartans return to action on the 10th of January with an in-town game against Chatham on the road. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
