#3 Washington (Mo.) Overpowers Women’s Basketball

Feb. 3 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The visiting #3 ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears controlled the tempo from the start and defeated the Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team 83-58 on Friday, February 3 in Skibo Gymnasium. The Bears improve to 17-2 and maintain their first place standing in the UAA with a 7-1 record. The Tartans drop to 5-14 overall and 0-8 in the UAA.
Washington’s fast paced offensive attack led to numerous open shots as the Bears shot 49.2% for the game from the field. The Tartans offense struggled, as they wound up shooting 34.3% for the game and committing 24 turnovers, eight more than the Bears.
In the first half, Tartan freshman Katie White (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) found fellow freshman Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) under the hoop for a lay-up with 7:41 to go cutting the Bears lead to nine (26-17). Washington then went on a 21-7 run over the next six minutes to roll into halftime with a 49-28 advantage. Bears senior forward Danielle Beehler was on fire in the first half, as she poured in 17 of her game-high 19 points and pulled down nine of her game-high 12 rebounds.
In the second half the Tartans cut the lead to 17 points on a lay-up by senior forward Dava Sommermeyer (Leonia, N.J./Academy for Advance Sci & Tech) off a pass from forward Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) to make it 52-35 with 17:17 remaining, but the Tartans would get no closer. A three-pointer by freshman Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney) rounded out the scoring for the Tartans and for the game with 26 seconds left, making the score 83-58.
Schilling came off the bench to lead the Tartans with 12 points. Roll added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) contributed eight points and six rebounds in the loss for the Tartans.
The Carnegie Mellon’s women basketball team will be in action Sunday, February 3, when they host the University of Chicago Maroons at 3:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium.
