Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat at Hands of Presidents

Dec. 9 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball team hosted a talented #25 ranked Washington & Jefferson squad Friday, December 9 at Skibo Gymnasium and the Presidents prevailed 75-56. The loss drops the Tartans to 2-5, while W & J improves to 5-1.

The athletic Presidents were able to jump out to a 23-8 lead midway through the first half and went into halftime ahead of the Tartans 42-27. Senior Melissa DeAngelo (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades) provided a spark off the Tartan bench, as she scored eight of her team-high 11 points in the first period.

The second half picked up where the first half left off as the Presidents were able to extend their lead to 28 points with eight minutes left. Carnegie Mellon kept their intensity up however, and fought back to close within 19. Freshman Meghan Macguire (Grand Island, N.Y.) made the most of her time on the court, as she dished out two assists on back-to-back possessions and followed that up with a jumper to narrow the margin.

Freshmen Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) and Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) each added 10 points for the Tartans in the loss, with Roll adding seven rebounds. Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) came off the bench to lead the Tartans with eight rebounds on the night. As a team the Tartans shot only 32% from the field, compared to W & J's 46%. The Tartans were out-rebounded 46-33 and each team committed 22 turnovers. A bright spot on the night was Carnegie Mellon's free throw shooting. The Tartans converted 18 of 22 shots from the charity stripe for an 82% average.

The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball team will next be in action Sunday, December 11 when they travel to play the Penn State-Altoona Lions in what is scheduled to be a 2:00 p.m. tip.
