Women’s Basketball Fall 45-32 to Washington College

Jan. 4 - (GETTYSBURG, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball team competed in the second day of the 16th Annual Days Inn Tournament held by Gettysburg College Wednesday, January 4, and fell 45-32 to Washington (Md.) College. The loss drops the Tartans to 4-7, as the Shorewomen move to 3-8 on the season.
After trailing 16-11 in the first half Carnegie Mellon freshman Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored on a lay-up to spark a 9-4 run to end the half. The run pulled the Tartans even (20-20) with the Shorewomen heading into the half.
The Tartans trailed by two (31-29) with 7:38 left in regulation before Washington went on a 14-3 to end the game. The Tartans shot just 1-of-8 from the field and committed six turnovers the rest of the way. Carnegie Mellon held the Shorewomen to 32 percent from the field, but the Tartans shot just 11-of-57 in the game, including 4-for-31 shooting in the second half.
Roll led the Tartans with nine points and eight rebounds, as freshman Gemma Easterling (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers) was Carnegie Mellon’s second leading scorer with six points. The Tartans for the second straight game had the edge on the glass grabbing 47 boards to the Shorewomen’s 45.
Carnegie Mellon remains on the road, traveling to University Athletic Association opponent Brandeis (Mass.) University on Friday, January 6 for a 6:00 p.m. tip and New York University on Sunday, January 8 for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
