Tartans Suffer Defeat at NYU in Women's Basketball

Jan. 8 - (NEW YORK, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon's women's basketball team visited #10 New York University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action Sunday, January 8 and fell 77-50 at the end of the day. The Tartans fall to 4-9 and 0-3 in the UAA, as the Violets even up their UAA record at 1-1 and hold a 10-1 overall mark.

The Violets used a 28-2 run in the first half to lead by as many as 29 points, 38-9, putting distance between them and the Tartans with 4:13 to go in the period.

Freshman guard Gemma Easterling (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers) led the Tartan offense with 12 points, as freshmen forwards Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) and Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) followed with eight points apiece.

The Tartan offense struggled, making just 26.6% from the field including 3-20 from behind the arc. To counter this, the Violets made 53.5% of their field goal attempts.

Katie Higier connected on four 3-point attempts, as she scored a game-high 16 points. Karen Bachman chipped in with 14 points on 5-6 shooting, but was kept in check on the boards grabbing just three rebounds, five below her season average.

The Tartans enjoy a week off before they host North Coast Athletic Conference member the College of Wooster on Monday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium.
