Women’s Basketball Fall 42-45 to Johns Hopkins in Season Opener

Nov. 19 - (BALTIMORE, Md.) - The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball opened up their 2005-2006 campaign Saturday, November 19 at the 14th annual Blue Jay Invitational, and fell to host Johns Hopkins 42-45. The Tartans start the year 0-1, as Johns Hopkins goes to 1-0.
The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 8-4 lead before Carnegie Mellon want on a 20-6 run to end the half and take the 10 point lead, 24-14. The Tartans controlled the lead until the 16:10 mark when senior Amanda Leese hit a jumper to give Johns Hopkins a one point lead at 28-27. There would be six more lead changes over the next 4:34 before Hopkins opened up a seven point lead with 9:57 to play.
The Tartans would not go away, as they fought back to knot the score for the fourth time in the contest at 40-40 on a jumper by freshman Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) with 2:35 left in regulation. On the Blue Jays next possession senior Katie O'Malley hit a three pointer to put Johns Hopkins up for good.
The Tartans were led by a pair of freshman Stacie Aleski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Gemma Easterling (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers), as they score 30 of Carnegie Mellon's 42 points. Aleski led all scores with 19 points and dished out three assists, as Easterling cashed in with 11 points.
Leading the way for Johns Hopkins was junior Julie Miller who converted 2 of 4 from behind the arc and finished with 13 points. Leese was Hopkins only other player in double figures as she recorded 11 points and pulled in a game-high 17 rebounds.
Carnegie Mellon will be back in action Sunday, November 20 as they take on the loser of the York / Rhodes contest at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
