Women's Basketball Drops 66-54 Decision to Gettysburg

Jan. 3 - (GETTYSBURG, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon women's basketball team traveled to Gettysburg College Tuesday, January 3 and dropped a 66-54 decision to the host Bullets in the first day of the 16th Annual Days Inn Tournament held by Gettysburg College. The loss moves the Tartans to 4-6, as Gettysburg improves to 6-5 with the win.
Gettysburg opened the game on a 20-8 run over the first thirteen minutes of the contest. Carnegie Mellon would battle back, as they put together a 22-9 run to end the half. Sophomore Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) hit a jumper with nine ticks left in the first half to give the Tartans a 30-29 lead heading into the locker room.
The Tartans would start the second half strong jumping out to a five point lead off a jumper by senior Dava Sommermeyer (Leonia, N.J./Academy for Advance Sci & Tech), taking the early 34-29 lead. The Bullets would score five straight points over the next two minutes to tie the score, and then take the lead for good (37-36) with 15:32 left in regulation.
Carnegie Mellon was led by a trio of players with nine points; Feola, senior Rebecca Shore (State College, Pa./State College), and freshman Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney). Light's nine points marked a career-high. Shore was a force on the boards along with freshman teammate Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley), as they recorded nine boards apiece.
Gettysburg had three players in double figures including senior Jennifer Bengel with a game-high 18 points. Bengel also pulled in a team-high eight rebounds for the Bullets.
The Tartans were out shot from the floor 29.6 percent to the Bullets 46.2 percent. Carnegie Mellon had the edge on the glass hauling in 46 rebounds, as Gettysburg managed 41.
Carnegie Mellon will be back in action Wednesday, January 4 as they play Washington (Md.) College in day two of the 16th Annual Days Inn Tournament. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
