Tartan Women Lose to Emory

Jan. 22 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – An early lead quickly evaporated for the Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team Sunday, January 22 when they hosted University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Emory University. Emory controlled the last 33 minutes of the game to go on to win 72-52 and up their record to 11-5 overall and 1-4 in the UAA. The Tartans lose their second straight to drop to 5-11 overall and 0-5 in the UAA.

Emory forward Lynn Oberschmidt was unstoppable down low, leading all scorers with 24 points on 10-11 shooting from the field. The Tartans were led by freshman forward Rachelle Roll’s (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) 13 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) came off the bench to score nine in the loss.

The Tartans held a four point advantage with 13:08 to go in the first half before Emory closed the half on a 27-10 run to go into halftime up 35-22. In the second half, Emory continued where they left off and increased their lead to as much as 29 points before the Tartans ended the game on a 12-3 run.

The Eagles shot 42.6% for the game and connected on nine three-pointers while out-rebounding the Tartans 38-33. Carnegie Mellon shot 37.3% from the field and turned the ball over 25 times versus Emory’s 20. The Eagles were able to capitalize on Carnegie Mellon’s sloppy play and outscore the Tartans 25-9 in the points off turnovers category.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team will travel to the University of Chicago to play the Maroons on Friday, January 27 in what is scheduled to be a 6:00 p.m. start.
