Women’s Basketball Falters Against #25 Chicago

Feb. 5 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team were defeated Sunday, February 5 as they played host to the University of Chicago Maroons. The Tartans succumbed 72-50, dropping their record to 5-15 overall and 0-9 in the UAA. The Maroons improve their record to 15-5 overall and 4-5 in the UAA.
The Tartans were led by senior Dava Sommermeyer’s (Leonia, N.J./Academy for Advance Sci & Tech) nine points, while Susie Gutowski poured in a game-high 21 points for the Maroons. Chicago Guard Nofi Mojidi added 14 points in the win. Gemma Easterling (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers) and Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Cannevin Catholic) each contributed eight points in the loss.
The Tartans took a 16-15 lead with 9:52 to go in the first half when Sommermeyer connected on a jumper off a pass from freshman guard Katie White (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). Carnegie Mellon’s lead quickly evaporated and Chicago closed out the half on a 24-10 run to head into the break up 39-26.
In the second half the Tartans hung with the Maroons, narrowing the deficit to 61-49 on a basket by freshman Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) with 6:19 remaining. The Maroons pulled away at that point en route to their 22 point victory.
The Tartans shot 28.8% for the game, compared to Chicago’s 45.8%. Chicago also forced the Tartans into 18 turnovers, while committing 18 of their own. The Maroons also dominated points in the paint and points off turnovers. Chicago finished with 36 points in the paint and 17 points off turnovers. The Tartans only had 8 and 12 in those categories respectively.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team will suit up again on Friday, February 10 when they host UAA opponent New York University at 6:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans lost to the Violets 77-50 in their meeting earlier this season at NYU.
