Tartans Fall Short on the Road

Stats

Feb. 19 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – Despite career days by three young Tartans, Carnegie Mellon's women's basketball team couldn't get the win in a 72-61 University Athletic Association (UAA) loss at Case Western Reserve, Sunday, February 19. The Tartans fall to 5-19 and 0-13, while Case Western ups their record to 11-13 and 4-9.

It was a close game early as sophomore guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 15-15. After a Case Western five point run, freshman forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) rattled off four straight points with two free throws and a field goal to bring the Tartans within one, 20-19, and 8:24 to go in the half.

Unfortunately for the Tartans, Case ended the half with a 20-4 run, as Carnegie Mellon went cold missing 10 of their last 12 shots. Helping the Spartans offensive effort was their four-of-nine performance from behind the arc to start the game.

Carnegie Mellon used a 12-4 run in the second stanza to get within nine points at 53-44 and 7:58 to play. Freshman guard Corey Innes (Commerce, Mich./Lakeland) scored seven of her career-high nine points during that run.

It was back-and-forth from that point on with Carnegie Mellon unable to get any closer than nine.

Feola finished with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, including three-of-four from behind the arc. Rothwell also had a career day as she recorded her first career double-double tying her career-high in points with 12 and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds.

Dana Dempsey led the Spartans with 23 points, converting six-of-nine triple attempts and making eight-of-13 baskets. Amber Hammell and Andrea Haylett each dropped in 13 points to follow Dempsey.

Carnegie Mellon will end their season with a home game against the University of Rochester on Saturday, February 25. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Skiob Gymnasium.
