Case Western Reserve Women Too Much for Tartans

Jan. 20 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team suffered a 64-48 defeat at the hands of the visiting Case Western Reserve Spartans Friday, January 20 in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans fall to 5-10 and 0-4 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play while the Spartans up their record to 8-6 and 2-2 in the UAA.
The Spartans took the lead early and were able to combat Carnegie Mellon’s runs with runs of their own thanks to an edge in the rebounding department. The Tartans were out rebounded 42-26 for the game with forward Ashley Horton pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds, of which 10 were offensive, for the Spartans. The Tartans went into halftime down 33-19 despite guard Gemma Easterling’s (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers) nine points in the first half.
The quicker Spartans increased their lead to 47-28 with 14:22 remaining, but the resilient Tartans clawed back to 58-47 with 5:09 left, on guard Ashley Mazziotti’s (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) third three pointer of the half. The Tartans would get no closer however and end up losing by 16.
Guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin Catholic) came off the bench to lead the Tartans with 12 points, including 10 in the second half. Easterling finished with a hard-fought 11 points and five steals, including steals on back-to-back possessions halfway through the second half. Forward Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the loss, to go with four steals of her own. Case Western Reserve was led by guard Amber Hammell’s 17 points and guard Mary Herendeen contributed 12 points off the bench in the win.
Both teams shot around 38% for the game, but the Spartans were able to get to the free throw line more often than the Tartans. Case Western Reserve went 13-19 from the charity stripe while Carnegie Mellon went 5-8. The two teams combined for 48 turnovers, with the Tartans committing 25, and 33 steals, with the Tartans leading that category at 17.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s team will next be in action Sunday, January 22 when they host UAA foe Emory University in what is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip. The Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team is squaring off against Emory’s men’s team at noon the same day. Both games are in Skibo Gymnasium.
