#15 Brandeis Overpowers Women’s Basketball

Feb. 12 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The strong post play of the visiting #15 ranked Brandeis Judges was too much for the Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team as the Tartans lost 66-51 on Sunday, February 12 in Skibo Gymnasium. The loss drops the Tartans to 5-17 overall and 0-11 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Judges stay in second place at 8-3 in the UAA and improve to 17-3 overall.
The Tartans received strong bench play to keep them within striking distance at 33-26 heading into halftime. Reserves Melissa DeAngelo (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades), Colleen Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Saint John Vianney), and Jeanette Schilling (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) led the way in the first half with six points apiece.
Early in the second half the Tartans cut the deficit to five points at 35-30 but the Judges continued to pound away inside and draw fouls sending them to the free throw line. The Brandeis lead got as big as 18 points on two occasions, including 61-43 with 5:32 remaining before settling for a 15 point victory.
Schilling came off the bench to lead the Tartans in scoring for the second straight game, with 12 points. Senior guard Dava Sommermeyer (Leonia, N.J./Academy for Advance Sci & Tech) added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Light contributed nine in the loss. The Judges were led by reserve Lauren Orlando’s 15 points and Christine Clancy’s 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Tartans made more field goals than the Judges for the game; however the Tartans only made three free throws, and two shots from behind the arc, compared to 20 free throws and six threes by Brandeis.
The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team will hit the road next weekend to play at Emory University on Friday, February 17 and at Case Western Reserve University Sunday, February 19. The Tartans will play their next and final home game against the University of Rochester on Saturday, February 25 in what is scheduled to be a 2:00 p.m. start.
