Tartan Women Give Brandeis Tough Battle
Stats
Jan. 6 - (BOSTON, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team gave University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent #2 Brandeis University all they could handle before falling by a final score of 81-66 in road action Friday evening. The Tartans drop to 4-8, 0-2, while the Judges improve to 8-0 and 1-0 in the UAA.
Carnegie Mellon used hot shooting to start the game, making six of their first seven shots and held a 14-11 lead at the 14:48 mark after back-to-back treys by the freshman pair of Gemma Easterling (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers) and Katie White (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). White's three-pointer marked the second of the half for the Tartans who shot five-of-five from behind the arc during the first period.
The teams would trade baskets before a jumper by senior forward Rebecca Shore (State College, Pa.) brought the Tartans within two points, 28-26 midway through the first half before Brandeis went on a 13-7 run to end the half with a 41-33 lead.
In the second half, Carnegie Mellon pulled within 10 points (66-56) on a trey by freshman guard Meghan Macguire (Grand Island, N.H.) at the 8:35 mark. Unfortunately for the Tartans, a run wasn't fueled as the team went scoreless over the next four minutes.
Shore led the Tartans with a season-high 14 points on 7-9 shooting from the field. Macguire and White both shot 3-3 from long distance for nine points, as the team shot 10-14 (71.4%) from three-point range. Freshman forward Ashley Rothwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia) led Carnegie Mellon on the boards with six rebounds, as fellow freshman forward Rachelle Roll (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) finished with eight points and four steals.
A pair of bench players, freshman Lauren Orlando and sophomore Courtney Tremblay, led the Judges with 17 points apiece. Senior Christine Clancy and junior Caitlin Malcolm each had 12 points and nine rebounds in the win.
The Judges out-rebounded the Tartans 39-33 for the game. Despite turning the ball over 20 times, the Tartans scored 18 points off 15 turnovers by the Judges.
Carnegie Mellon will be back in action Sunday, January 8 as they continue their UAA road trip with a visit to New York University for a 3:00 p.m. game.
