Men’s Track & Field Collects Team Championship at W&J Invitational

Apr. 5 – (WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s track and field team finished first at the Washington & Jefferson College Invitational on Saturday, April 5 with 144 points. Penn St. Behrend University placed second with 126 points. The Tartans improved from last week and set numerous personal or season bests in their second outdoor competition of the season.

Carnegie Mellon collected four first place finishes at the invitational as senior Mike Reggie (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) won the hammer throw (49.44 meters), sophomore Chris Bridgman (Casselberry, Fla./Lyman) won the pole vault (4.26 meters), freshman Essien Ohues (Alpharetta, Ga./Chaptahoochee) won the high jump (1.90 meters), and senior Scott Fortune (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) won the 800 meters (1:55.59).

Junior Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) ran a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time in the 1500 meters as he placed second in a time of 3:53.48. Sophomore James Hulley (Northampton, Mass.) performed well in the throwing events finishing second in the shot put (13.99 meters), third in the discus (44.30 meters) and seventh in the hammer throw (38.93 meters). Senior Chris Uhrinek (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) finished third in the javelin with a season best throw of 50.24 meters.

Senior Eric Tang (Alhambra, Calif./Dunn School) collected a pair of third place finishes, jumping 6.37 meters in the long jump and running an 11.38 in the finals in the 100 meter dash. Freshman Patrick O’Brien (Furnance, Pa./State College Area) contributed a fourth place finish in the high jump (1.80 meters), freshman Mike Tomovich (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) placed fourth in the long jump (6.30 meters) and junior Chris Fornataro (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) finished fourth in the hammer throw (41.56 meters).

Sophomore Chris Bogie (Darien, Conn.) finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (57.27), sophomore Chris Rizzo (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) just missed breaking sixteen minutes in the 5000 meters en route to finishing fifth (16:03.33) and freshman Nate Bussiere (Canton, Conn.) set a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.19, good for fifth overall in the race. Sophomore Eric Couphos (Chatham, N.J.) was the top Tartan in the triple jump placing fifth (12.63 meters) and junior Ryan Anderson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) took fifth in the 1500 meters (4:06.82) with sophomore Dario Donatelli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) on his heels in sixth (4:07.47).

Tang finished sixth in the 200 meters (23.15) and freshman Chris Luther (Riverview, Fla.) was sixth in the 110 meter high hurdles (16.39 seconds). The Tartan 4x400 meter relay team placed second with a time of 3:24.09 and the 4x100 meter relay team took third with a time of 43.04 seconds. Both relay times were improvements over a week ago.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s outdoor track and field team will be in action again Tuesday afternoon when they host the Carnegie Mellon Tri-Meet on the track in Gesling Stadium. Events will be starting at 4 p.m.
