Harvey Named Academic All-District
June 5 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University junior
Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team for cross country and track and field for 2008. CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition. The official sponsor is ESPN the Magazine.
Carnegie Mellon is part of District 2, which is comprised of non-NCAA Division I Colleges in the states of Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. In order to be nominated a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and hold a 3.2 GPA or better.
In the fall Harvey was named NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Athlete of the Year for the 2007 collegiate cross country season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He placed 12th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in helping the Tartans to 9th place team finish. Harvey is a three-time Cross Country Individual Academic All-America and as a freshman was one of seven males in Division III to be an Individual Academic All-America recipient with a 4.0.
In the winter Harvey earned his second straight All-America distinction at the NCAA Indoor Championships placing fourth in the mile. This past indoor season he set three school records coming in the 1,500 meters, mile and 5,000 meters.
In the spring the junior qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second straight season. He also helped the Tartans to their second straight University Athletic Association Outdoor Team Championship with a title in the 1500 meters and 4x800 relay.
For being named first team, Harvey will now move onto the national ballot.
