Men’s Track and Field Has Good Showing at State Farm Shell Games

Feb. 3 – (MORGANTOWN, W.Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team competed at the State Farm Shell Games hosted by West Virginia University on Saturday, February 3. The Tartans performed well in the unscored meet, collecting three individual first-place finishes, highlighted by sophomore Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) winning the mile race in a school record time of 4:18:05.

Sophomore Carlton Reeves (Attleboro, Mass./Moses Brown) and senior Nicholas Bannister (Sugar Land, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) also won individual events, with Reeves winning the 400 meter race (53:07) and Bannister crossing the line first in the 60 meter hurdles (8.53). Senior Davey Quinn (Glen Ellyn, Ill./St. Francis Prep) finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.63 and junior Drew Miller (Westchester, Pa./Westchester East) took second in the 1000 meter run, finishing in 2:37.99.

Senior Eric Tang (Los Angeles, Calif./Dunn) competed for the team in multiple events. Tang placed third in the triple jump (13.14 meters) and long jump (6.74 m), while having an eighth place showing in the high jump (1.65 meters). Sophomore Colin Marks (Washington Crossing, Md./Council Rock North) led the team with a fifth place finish (1.78 meters) in the high jump and sophomore Joel Palko (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) finished fourth in the triple jump (12.68 m).

In other field events, Chris Bridgman (Casselberry, Fla./Lyman) placed sixth in the pole vault (3.80 m), freshman James Hulley (Northampton, Mass.) finished sixth in the shot put (13.19 m) and junior Mike Reggie (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) took sixth in the weight throw (14.84 meters).

Senior Russel Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) finished sixth in the 200 meters (23.55), sophomore Breck Fresen (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) placed seventh in the 3000 meters (9:05.12), and freshman Chris Bogie (Darien, Conn.) finished fourth in the 500 meters (1:09.74). These three were all top finishes for the Tartans in these events.

Rounding out the track events, senior Geoff Misek (Goodrich, Mich.) finished fifth in the mile in 4:32.47, junior Kiley Williams (Washington, D.C./Randolph-Macon) took fifth in the 500 meters in 1:09.91, and freshman Dan Burrows (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) placed sixth in the 800 meters (2:03.73). In addition, sophomore Raphael Bertrand (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) finished fourth in the 1000 meters (2:44.51) and sophomore Craig Hahn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.21).

The Tartans’ 4x400 meter ‘A’ relay team finished third with a time of 3:32.56 and the ‘B’ team placed seventh crossing the line in 3:46.00.

The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team will compete again this Saturday, February 10 at Bucknell University.
