Men’s Track and Field Take Bronze at Spartan Relays

Jan. 27 – (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team placed third out of 11 teams at the Spartan Relays hosted by Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, January 27. The Tartans finished with 80 points and Case Western Reserve won the meet with 91.

The Tartans won two events, as junior Mike Reggie (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) won the weight throw (14.44 meters) and senior Nicholas Bannister (Sugar Land, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) won the 55 meter hurdles (7.88 seconds). Senior Eric Tang (Los Angeles, Calif./Dunn) scored points for the team in a pair of events. Tang finished second in the triple jump (12.89 meters) and fourth in the long jump (6.05 m).

The Tartans’ 4x400 meter relay team consisting of freshman Chris Bogie (Darien, Conn.), sophomore Carlton Reeves (Attleboro, Mass./Moses Brown), senior Russel Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), and freshman Dan Burrows (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) finished third with a time of 3:33.95, and the 4x200 meter relay team took home third place also, with a time of 1:34.22.

In other running events, junior Drew Miller (Westchester, Pa./Westchester East) finished third in the mile (4:31.29) and sophomore Mike Haley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took home fifth (4:37.37). Junior Dan Carmody (San Diego, Calif./Thomas Jefferson) ran a personal best time of 16:22.68 for the 5,000 meter race to finish fifth. Freshman Chris Rizzo (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) was right on his heels, finishing in sixth with a time of 16:23.52.

In other events, freshman James Hulley (Northampton, Mass.) placed fourth in the shot put (13.67 m) and sophomore Joel Palko (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) finished third in the triple jump (12.82 m).

The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team will compete again this Saturday, February 3 at West Virginia University.
