Men’s Track and Field Compete at Bucknell and Robert Morris

Apr. 14 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s outdoor track and field team split up this past weekend, April 13-14, with the top distance runners traveling to Lewisburg to compete at the Bucknell Invitational Friday night, and the rest of the team traveling to race in the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational hosted by Robert Morris University on Saturday. Both groups put together strong performances in their final races before the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships held on April 21 and 22.
At Bucknell on Friday, against strong competition, sophomore Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished first on the team and ninth overall in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:55.11. Junior Davey Quinn (Glen Ellyn, Ill./St. Francis Prep) finished four spots behind Harvey in 13th overall with a time of 3:55.90. Junior Drew Miller (Westchester, Pa./Westchester East) took 26thoverall with a time of 4:02.46. In the 3000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Ryan Anderson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) set a season best of 9:47.50, good for 15th overall. In the 5000 meters, freshman Dario Donatelli Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) finished in 59th place with a personal record time of 15:20.71 and sophomore Andrew Frederickson (Seymour, Conn./Hopkins) ran a personal record 15:22.51 to come in 60th overall. Senior Mike Bridenbaugh (Defiance, Ohio) came in 73rd overall with a time of 15:30.89.
At Robert Morris on Saturday, the men’s team finished in second place out of five teams with 144 points. Robert Morris University took home the team title with 251 points. Senior Jeff Polack (Medina, Ohio) took home the lone Tartan individual title, as he won the 400 meter hurdles in 58.08 seconds.
Carnegie Mellon had a handful of second place finishes including senior Russel Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) in the 200 meters (23.10 seconds), junior Kiley Williams (Washington, D.C./Randolph-Macon) in the 400 meters (51.43 seconds), freshman Chris Rizzo (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) in the 5000 meters (personal record of 16:02.23), junior Jason Jura (Forest Hill, Md./Dulaney) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (season best of 10:08.48), and sophomore Craig Hahn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) in both the 400 meter hurdles (59.22 seconds) and the 110 meter high hurdles (17.28 seconds).
Freshman James Hulley (Northampton, Mass.) contributed a second place finish in the shot put (13.90 m) as well as a third place finish in the discus (40.22 m). Other third place finishes included junior Scott Fortune (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) in the 800 meters (2:00.07), junior Dan Carmody (San Diego, Calif./Thomas Jefferson) in the 5000 meters (16:22.06), freshman Chris Bridgman (Casselberry, Fla./Lyman) in the pole vault (personal record of 4.03 m), and junior Michael Reggie (Columbus Ohio/St. Charles Prep) in the hammer throw (48.51 m).
In other running events, the Tartans’ 4x100 meter relay team came in first place with a time of 43.93 seconds. Sophomore Carlton Reeves (Attleboro, Mass./Moses Brown) finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:00.54), with senior Keith Torluemke (Redondo Beach, Calif./ Calif. Acad. of Math & Science) on his heels, coming in fifth place with a time of 2:00.65. Senior Kevin Pruzinsky (Trumbull, Conn.) led the team in the 1500 meter race, finishing fourth in 4:18.70.
Sophomore Colin Marks (Washington Crossing, Md./Council Rock North) set a season best in the high jump (1.79 m) en route to finishing in fifth place. Senior Eric Tang (Los Angeles, Calif./Dunn) led the team with a sixth place finish in the long jump (6.28 m) and a seventh place finish in the triple jump (12.47 m). Sophomore Joel Palko (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) complemented Tang by finishing seventh in the long jump (6.12 m) and tenth in the triple jump (12.30 m).
Junior Chris Uhrinek (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) was tops on the team in the javelin, finishing sixth with a throw of 44.54 m. Sophomore Chris Fornataro (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) placed sixth in the discus (37.60 m) and Reggie placed seventh thanks to a throw of 37.36 m.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team will travel to Atlanta, Georgia where Emory University will host the 2007 outdoor UAA track and field championships on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. The Tartans hope to build off their back-to-back second place finishes and knock off two-time defending champion Washington University in St. Louis.
