Two Carnegie Mellon Men’s Track and Field Athletes Honored By UAA
Coaching Staff Receives Recognition

Eric Tang (Los Angeles, Calif./Dunn) was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Outstanding Performer in the field events, while freshman
James Hulley (Northampton, Mass.) was named UAA Men’s Rookie of the Year by the track and field coaches of the association, as announced Monday, April 30.
The honors come after the Tartans claimed their first outright UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday, April 22. The Tartans won the title by 1.5 points over host Emory (Ga.) University, with a fourth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, the last event of the meet. It was 1993 when the Tartans were last victorious at the UAA outdoor meet, when they shared the title with the University of Rochester.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s coaching staff was also honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year under the direction of Head Coach Dario Donatelli and assistant coaches Gary Aldrich, Rob Czlonka and Ken Hallinen. This marks the second time in three year’s that the staff has received the honor.
Tang was crowned champion in two field events, long and triple jump, at the 2007 UAA Championships. He recorded a season best distance in both events, jumping 13.81 meters in the triple jump and 6.75 meters in the long jump. Tang also competed in the 100 meter dash where he placed second with yet another season best showing of 10.99 seconds. He also garnered All-Association honors as a member of the 400-meter relay which placed third.
Hulley claimed two UAA titles on his way to being named Rookie of the Year. He recorded a distance of 14.71 meters in the shot put and then won the discus with a distance of 42.54 meters on the second day of competition. Hulley becomes the second men’s track and field outdoor Rookie of the Year honoree.
