Men's Track and Field Take Second at UAA Championships

Apr. 23 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon men's track and field team finished second for the second straight year at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Case Western University on April 22 and April 23. The Tartans finished with 166.5 points compared to champion Washington University in St. Louis's 217.

Carnegie Mellon received strong performances from their relay teams and jumpers, as junior Eric Tang (Los Angeles, Calif./Dunn) won the long jump with a jump of 13.35 meters and the 4x400 meter relay team and 4x800 meter team both took home individual titles. The 4x400 team consisting of Keith Torluemke (Redondo Beach, Calif./CA Acad of Math & Sci.), junior Mark Davis (Loveland, Ohio), freshman Carlton Reeves (Attleboro, Mass./Moses Brown) and anchor junior Russel Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) ran a season best 3:22.52, edging out Washington University. The 4x800 team of freshman Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), junior Geoff Misek (Goodrich, Mich), junior Davey Quinn (Glen Ellyn, Ill./St. Francis Prep) and Torluemke ran a 7:48.07 to narrowly beat Brandeis.

Tang followed up his victory in the long jump with a second place finish of 13.35 meters in the triple jump. Freshmen Colin Marks (Washington Crossing, Md./Council Rock North) and Joel Palko (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) added depth to both events, as Marks took fourth in the triple jump (13.23 meters) and sixth in the long jump (6.29 meters). Palko took sixth in the triple jump (12.82 meters) and seventh in the high jump (6.25 meters). Marks also competed in the high jump, finishing sixth with a height of 1.74 meters.

In the distance events, senior Nick End (Shorewood, Wis.) finished third in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:43.16. Freshman Ryan Anderson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) set a personal record en route to finishing fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:34.82, putting him in third all-time in the steeplechase in Carnegie Mellon history. Sophomore Drew Miller (Westchester, Pa./Westchester East) collected a fifth place finish (4:01.44) in the 1500 meters with Harvey finishing right on his heels in sixth (4:02.38).

In the field events, senior Tom Matta (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) capped off a memorable career by finishing second in both the hammer throw (49.44 meters) and shot put (14.40 meters) and fifth in the discus throw (39.91 meters). Sophomore Michael Reggie's (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) personal record throw of 42.08 meters in the discus was good enough to put him second overall.

In other running events, the men's 4x100 relay team consisting of junior Nick Bannister (Sugar Land, Texas/Stephen F. Austin), Tang, Palko, and Verbofsky finished second overall with a time of 43.29. Verbofsky took second in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.53 and seventh in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.58. Reeves took fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 51.51 and Davis came in sixth with a time of 51.75. In the 110 high hurdles Bannister set a personal record with a second place finish of 14.98 seconds and in the 400 hurdles, junior Jeff Polack (Medina, Ohio/Medina) took second with a time of 56.44. Torluemke and Quinn raced in the 800 meter run with Torluemke finishing fourth (1:56.65) and Quinn ending up in sixth (1:58.65).
