Men’s Track Places First at Spartan Relays

Jan. 28 - (CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon men’s indoor track and field team competed at the Case Western Reserve Relays Saturday, January 28, as the Tartans finished first out of a field of eight scoring 129 points. Thiel was the closes behind the Tartans with 80 points followed by the host Case Western Reserve with 65. This was the first team scoring meet that Carnegie Mellon competed in for the 2006 season. The Tartans turned in three first places and had 13 top three finishes on the day.
Carnegie Mellon’s sophomore Drew Miller (Westchester, Pa./Westchester East), freshman Brian Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and junior Geoff Misek (Goodrich, Mich.) swept the one mile run with times of 4:27.07, 4:27.92 and 4:29.60, respectively. The mid distance runners followed in their path, as freshman Keith Torluemke (Redondo Beach, Calif./Academy of Math & Science) and junior Davey Quinn (Glen Ellyn, Ill./St. Francis Prep) finished first and second in the 800 meter run. Torluemke paced the field with a time of 1:57.63, as Quinn crossed the finish line in 1:58.97.
In the field events senior Tom Matta (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) placed first in the weight throw with a distance of 16.38 meters and finished second in the shot put after throwing a distance of 13.95 meters.
The Tartans turned in four other second place finishes on the day; Junior Nick Bannister (Sugar Land, TX/Stephen F. Austin) in the 55 meter hurdles (7.87), freshman Colin Marks (Washington Crossing, Md./Council Rock North) in the long jump (6.36 meters) and freshman Carlton Reeves (Attleboro, Mass./Moses Brown) in the 400 meter dash (52.15).
Junior Russel Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, PA /Fox Chapel) had a third place finish in 200 meter dash (23.51) rounding out the top individual performances.
The Tartans will be back in action Saturday, February 4 as they travel to Denison University for the Big Red Invitational.
