Men’s Track and Field Wins Carnegie Mellon Invite

Apr. 11 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team held a dual mid-week meet on Tuesday, April 11 against Waynesburg College in which Carnegie Mellon won 87-75. A beautiful day with temperatures in the 70s and not a cloud in the sky provided the setting for fast times and solid performances despite the small number of teams competing.
Junior Geoff Misek (Goodrich, Mich.) became the first Tartan to break four minutes in the 1500 meters this season, running a personal record time of 3:59.25 en route to winning the race. Carnegie Mellon swept the first 11 spots in the 1500, with sophomore Drew Miller (Westchester, Pa./Westchester East) coming in second with a personal record time of 4:01.51 and freshman Mike Haley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) taking third with a personal record time of 4:03.33.
Junior Davey Quinn (Glen Ellyn, Ill./St. Francis Prep) won the 800 with a personal record time of 1:54.41, giving him the third fastest time in school history. Junior Keith Torluemke (Redondo Beach, Calif./CA Acad of Math & Sci.) finished second with a personal record time of 1:55.83, and freshman Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) took fourth with a personal record time of 1:57.10.
Other individual champions were junior Nick Bannister (Sugar Land, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) in both the 110 meter high hurdles and 400 meter hurdles, freshman Colin Marks (Washington Crossing, Md./Council Rock North) in the triple jump, and senior Tom Matta (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) in the hammer throw. Bannister ran the 110 HH in 15.47 and followed that with a time of 58.08 in the 400 hurdles. Marks won the triple jump with a distance of 13.42 meters/44'0.50'', and Matta won the hammer throw with a throw of 49.00 meters/160'09''. Matta also took second in the shot put with a throw of 13.50 meters/44'3.50''. Junior pole vaulter Edwin Uber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) was the only participant in the men's event and cleared a jump of 12'.
The men’s “A” 4x400 meter relay team won with a time of 3:34.94, edging out the “B” team comprised of distance runners who stepped up and ran an impressive 3:38.69 to take second. Other strong individual performances include junior Russel Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) taking second in the 200 meters (22.35) and junior Jeff Polack (Medina, Ohio) taking second in the 400 meter hurdles (58.92).
The Carnegie Mellon men’s track and field team will split up this weekend, with some of the distance runners racing Friday, April 14 at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic while everyone else will compete Saturday, April 15 at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
