#16 Men's Tennis Places Third at UAA Championships

Apr. 27 – (ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team placed third at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships held on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. Sunday, April 27. The sixteenth ranked Tartans dropped a 5-0 decision Saturday to #7 Emory before topping #21 the University of Chicago 5-2 in the third place match Sunday afternoon. The win pushes the Tartans dual recorded to 18-7, as Chicago moves to 13-8.
The Cardinal and Gray took a 2-1 advantage following doubles play. Sophomore
Jon Spero (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) and freshman
Alex Nemerov (Lake Forest, Ill.) defeated Mark Bonner and Bharath Sithian 8-3 at third doubles. The Tartans other win during doubles came from the duo of senior
Andrew Clearfield (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) and sophomore
Ravi Raghavan (Saratoga, Calif.) at second doubles, as they won 9-7 over Lado Bakhutashvili and Tim Walsh.
Carnegie Mellon picked up straight set wins at fourth, fifth and sixth doubles to clinch the match and third place for the second time in three years. Spero won 6-4, 7-5 over Garrett Brinker at fourth singles, junior
Yiran Liu (Rockville, Md./Wootton) defeated Bonner at fifth singles 6-4, 6-4 and freshman
Bobby MacTaggart (Boonton, N.J./Newark Academy) won 6-1, 6-3 over Steve Saltarelli at sixth singles.
Emory University won the UAA Championships, as they defeated Washington University in St. Louis 6-2 claiming their nineteenth straight title and twentieth in the twenty-one history of UAA tennis.
