Tartans Win Over Robert Morris

Sept. 14 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University’s men’s tennis team started its first match of the season with a 3-0 lead after doubles action and went on to win 8-1 over Division I Robert Morris University.

Freshmen Bobby MacTaggart (Boonton, N.Y./Newark Academy) and Matt Belenky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) started their careers with victories at number two and number six singles, both over senior opponents. MacTaggart defeated Nick Paganetti 6-3, 6-0, while Belenky topped David Yokitis 6-1, 6-1.

Also recording a win to start the season were sophomores Ravi Raghavan (Saratoga, Calif.) and Payom Dousti (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior Spencer Svetcov (Scarsdale, N.Y.). Freshman Alex Nemerov (Lake Forest, Ill.) took sophomore Sean Curley to a third set super tiebreaker before falling at number one singles 7-6 (7-0), 4-6, 1-0 (12-10).

In doubles action, Nemerov paired with sophomore James Muliawan (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) to win 8-4 in the number one slot. MacTaggart and Raghavan won their two spot 8-3 while junior Yiran Liu (Rockville, Md./Wooton) and sophomore Nikola Ljuboja (Highland Park, Ill.) won number three doubles, 8-4.

The Tartans follow up this match with one against Duquesne University and travel to Meadville, Pa., for the Nancy J. Heath Tournament at Allegheny College on Saturday, September 15.
