Men’s Tennis Receives National Ranking
Nov. 13 – (SKILLMAN, N.J.) – The first national Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings came out with Carnegie Mellon University’s men’s team appearing 14th on the list of 25 schools. The team is also receiving an Atlantic South regional ranking of 4th with two singles players and a doubles pair earning recognition.
This marks the fourth straight year the men’s team has been featured in the national rankings as they finished 18th in the nation last season.
The Tartans have started the 2007-08 year with a 3-1 dual match record, with the loss coming against Division I opponent, Duquesne University. Their wins include Division I Robert Morris University, Case Western Reserve University and Allegheny College.
Freshman Alex Nemerov (Lake Forest, Ill.) has a regional ranking of 14th while sophomore Jon Spero (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) is 20th out of the 25 individuals ranked. Nemerov has a 5-1 record against Division III opponents and competed in the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals on September 30. Spero nearly made it to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals but fell to the number one seed in three sets.
Nemerov and doubles partner Yiran Liu (Rockville, Md./Wootton) found a spot in the regions top 15 with a marking of 13. The pair has a 2-1 record for the short season as they nearly made the semifinals at ITA Regionals.
There are currently four teams on the men’s schedule that are ranked in the nation and the season resumes on Sunday, February 3 with an indoor match at Division II Mercyhurst College.
