Three Tartans Reach the Round of 16 at ITA Southeast Regional

Sept. 29 – (FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – Two Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis players are moving on to the round of 16 at the ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championships and one doubles team advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday, September 29.

Sophomore Jon Spero (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) and freshman Alex Nemerov (Lake Forest, Ill.) each won two matches to open singles play on Saturday, while Nemerov teamed up with junior Yiran Liu (Rockville, Md./Wootton) in doubles play to advance to the quarterfinals.

Spero defeated Dustin Nelson of Christopher Newport before downing Raffi Roberti from Johns Hopkins in the second round. Spero will face the first seed Sunday, John James of Mary Washington.

Nemerov started the afternoon with a victory over Seth Feibelman of Washington and Lee before knocking off Ediie Carver of Mary Washington.  Nemerov will also face a tough opponent in Sunday’ play, as he squares off against Matt Nicholson of Salisbury.  Nicholson entered the tournament as the fifth seed.

Lui and Nemerov won their first match after a member from Christopher Newport had to retire before winning their second match over Todd Green and Rafael Roldan of Washington College who upset the second seed in the first round

Sunday's action will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue all day.
