#17 Tartans Fall at Home to #22 Johns Hopkins

Apr. 6 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – #22 Johns Hopkins University visited Pittsburgh for an afternoon tennis match with #17 Carnegie Mellon University and upset the home team by a 6-3 score. The Blue Jays are now 7-5 on the season while the Tartans drop to 12-6.

The match was exciting from start to finish as Hopkins scrapped by in each doubles match taking a 3-0 lead with 8-6 wins on courts one and three and a 9-8 (7-3) win on court two.

Carnegie Mellon's top three put the Tartans right back in the match with tough wins as sophomore James Muliawan (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) finished first with a two set win, 6-4, 7-5 (8-6), in the number two spot. Freshman Alex Nemerov (Lake Forest, Ill.) battled back to win at number three singles in three sets, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-2 to give the Tartans their second victory and senior Andrew Clearfield (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) defeated David Maldow 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) at number one singles to tie the match.

Hopkins rallied back to take a 4-3 lead when freshman Bobby MacTaggart (Boonton, N.J./Newark Academy) fell to Peter Vale 6-3, 6-2 and then sealed the match with a win by Casey Blythe over sophomore Jon Spero (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) at number four singles, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

The Tartans will continue action with a home match against Grove City College at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7.
