Tartans Win Allegheny Invitational

Sept. 15 – (MEADVILLE, Pa.) – A 6-0 win over Case Western Reserve University started the Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team on their way to the titel at the Nancy J. Heath Gator Invitational held by Allegheny College on Saturday, September 15. The Tartans finished the tournament with a 5-1 win over host Allegheny for the title.

Rain in the area shortened the matches and in both cases the Tartans took all three doubles points to start off strong. "Our doubles teams played really well winning smart points all day," commented head coach Andy Girard.

The sophomore pair of Nikola Ljuboja (Highland Park, Ill.) and James Muliawan (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) defeated Case's number one doubles team by an 8-1 score. Freshman Bobby MacTaggart (Boonton, N.J./Newark Academy) and sophomore Ravi Raghavan (Saratoga, Calif.) won at number two doubles by the same score and freshman Alex Nemerov (Lake Forest, Ill.) and junior Yiran Liu (Rockville, Md./Wootton) blanked the Spartans number three team.

Finishing their singles matches first to record points for the Tartans were sophomore Jon Spero (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) in the number two spot (6-1, 6-0), Nemerov in the number three spot (6-0, 6-0) and junior Spencer Svetcov (Scarsdale, N.Y.) at number six (6-1, 6-1).

The men's team will next be in action for the ITA Regional Tournament held by the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on September 29 - October 1.
