Men’s Tennis Players Ljuboja and Muliawan Win ITA Regional

Oct. 2 - (SALISBURY, Md.) - Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team had three players advance to the final day of ITA Atlantic South Regional Men's Tennis Championships Monday, October 2. The doubles pair of freshmen Nikola Ljuboja (Highland Park, Ill.) and James Muliawan (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) captured the doubles regional championship, while freshmen Jon Spero (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) and Muliawan fell in the semifinals of single competition.

The Tartans #1 doubles tandem, Ljuboja and Muliawan, defeated the sixth seed of Alex Buxbaum and Thomas Kinrade of Haverford 8-6 in the championship. The duo trailed 4-6 before winning the last four games to bring home the Regional Championship and earn a spot at the 2006 the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers October 12-15.

In the singles play on Monday, Spero and Muliawan both were eliminated in the semifinal round. Spero was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by David Maldow of Johns Hopkins and Muliawan lost 6-4, 6-4 to John James of Mary Washington.
