Clearfield, Kuhn and Liu Advance at ITAs
Oct. 1 - (FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – Carnegie Mellon had a strong showing during the first and second rounds of singles play at the ITA Tournament held at University of Mary Washington. Two sophomores and a freshman won all their matches during Saturday’s competition and move on to Sunday’s round of 16.
Sophomore Andrew Clearfield (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) defeated Kevin Ma in the first round by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and then topped Tim Ross 6-1, 6-3 to advance. Clearfield also won his first round doubles match with junior Dan Munoz (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) against #5 David Sands and Brandon Harris, but no score has been posted.
Fellow sophomore Stephen Kuhn (Evansville, Ind./W.H. Harrison), seeded ninth, posted wins against Stew Wetmore (6-0, 6-1) and Nelson Bunn (6-1, 6-1). Kuhn also won his first round doubles match by a score of 8-6. His partner was senior Carl Yang (Plano, Texas/Plano West).
Freshman Yiran Liu (Rockville, Md./Wootton), also seeded ninth, moved on in singles play with wins over Evan Stiegel (6-2, 6-2) and Kevin Shaughnessy (6-3, 6-1). Liu won two doubles matches with partner Jordan Koslosky (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) by scores of 8-3. Koslosky and Liu are seeded fifth in doubles action.
Both doubles teams of Kuhn/Yang and Koslosky/Liu play in quarterfinal action Sunday.
